The story behind the albums
Step into early 20th-century Asia with rare photos from China, Japan, Macao & beyond.

The photographs in the main album were taken more than 100 years ago by a Danish bank official employed in the Russo-Chinese Bank from his journeys through China, Formosa, Macao, Japan, the Philippines, and Russia.
Now carefully preserved and scanned in high resolution, they reveal daily life, encounters, and unseen moments from a lost world.
This single, monumental album features over 700 original black-and-white photographs, primarily taken between 1900 and 1907.

Other photo albums
In addition to the main album, several other photo albums will be represented: one from Thailand and Burma, one from Tibet and India, and a selection of rare images from East and Southern Africa and Ceylon. Photos from unusual places to visit in the early 1900s will also be shown, including Midway Island, Guam, Ascension, and others. Further visits to Canada, Australia, and New York are included and will be described.

The photos & the photographers
Most of the photographs are amateur in origin, captured with care and curiosity. Many reveal remarkable composition and atmosphere. Others were professionally staged in early studios across Asia or taken by skilled photographers documenting expeditions, daily life, and colonial encounters.

About the curators
All the work on this site is carried out by amateurs with a genuine interest in historical documentation. The photos are privately owned and presented out of respect for their cultural and visual value.

The formats, medium, resolution & condition
- Formats: Primarily small-format contact prints, ranging from approx. 8×12 cm to postcard size — including some panoramic photos — and over 30 large-format albumen prints.
- Medium: Silver gelatin, albumen, and early collodion prints on original paper stock.
- Resolution & Condition: Most are sharp, well-preserved, and rich in detail — now scanned in high resolution to retain their authenticity.

Captions & provenance
Nearly all photos are annotated by hand in the original albums. These annotations offer rare context and personal insight from the early 20th-century travelers who assembled the collections.

Scanning, restoration, sharing
- Scanning: All photos have been scanned professionally using high-end equipment to preserve maximum detail.
- Restoration: Has been carefully executed to rejuvenate the images. Due to their age and handling, many originals were not in pristine condition. Dust, scratches, and bruised corners have been gently treated. Only minimal adjustments (if any) have been made to contrast or tone.
